Australia needs a national housing affordability strategy to deal with an increasing housing crisis, Labor leader Kevin Rudd says...
Mr Rudd today said the Federal Government had failed to act on the crisis which was locking out first-home buyers and low-income earners from the housing market.
He said Labor planned to tackle increasing rents by introducing a tax credit scheme for potential landlords who offered cheaper rental accommodation.
"Housing rents are going through the roof and it is preventing first-home buyers from getting into the home ownership market. Therefore, we have got a crisis when it comes to assisting those who are in the rental market to have access to more affordable rental accommodation."
Mr Rudd said the crisis needed a whole lot of government response, rejecting claims by Treasurer Peter Costello yesterday that the states were to blame for not releasing enough land for housing.
"I don't believe in cost shifting, blame shifting.
"Everyone has got partial responsibility here but what I do notice is the State Governments are rolling up their sleeves to do what they can...
"And I don't see the Commonwealth with its sleeves rolled up."
